Begonvil, one of the commonly grown ornamental outdoor plants in Mediterranean Region, fascinates and makes people fall in love with it for it has an ivy and flamboyant form. Legend has it that one day someone fell in love with it and took it to other lands. However, Begonvil was so in love with the Mediterranean that it did not take root in other lands and died. It showed its ostentatious flowers in clusters only where it belonged.

This flower stands tall like the legendary handsome Narkissos which it’s named after. Narcissus is also one of the most popular flowers in the world. According to the legend, Narkissos, the most handsome man in the world lived in Karaburun. All the girls and even the fairies that lived close by were in love with this handsome man. Bu he never responds to anyone’s love. One of the fairies that was rejected by Narkissos, begs Zeus for Narkissos to be punished. Zeus accepts the fairy’s plea and says: “One that does not love others may only love himself”. One day beautiful Narkissos goes by the lake and as he bends down to take a sip of water he sees his own reflection and falls in love with himself. After that day he can’t get enough of watching his own reflection. One day, while looking at his reflection he falls into the lake and drowns. As the fairies that are in love with him try to pull him out of the water hoping to bury him, a beautiful flower the likes of which had never been seen emerges from the water. The fairies love both color and fragrance of the flower and name it Narcissus after their beloved handsome Narkissos.
