İris Zambağı

The rainbow goddess Iris is the herald of Zeus and Hera and carries all the news from heaven to the world through the rainbow. In Latin the name means “the eye of heaven”. Since the colors and lines of the iris flower resemble the symbol of the eye, this flower is named after this goddess. In ancient Greece, it is believed that every person carries a piece of heaven because all people have their "pupils".

Anemon

According to the legend, Adonis, a mortal, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love were madly in love with each other. But this love became the victim of the jealousy of Aphrodite’s ex-lover Ares, the god of war. One day, while Adonis was out hunting Ares shoots him. Although Aphrodite runs to rescue him, Adonis dies by the time she reaches him. In a ceremony Aphrodite rubs her lover’s body with scents and embraces him while carrying him to the land of the dead. Meanwhile, the beautiful scents coming from Adonis’ body mix with his blood and spills onto the earth, each drop becoming a beautiful flower as it hits the soil. This flower was named Anemone in memory of Adonis and Aphrodite’s love.

Ağlayan Gelin

There are two stories related to Kaiser’s Crown (also known as ‘Crown Imperial’):

1) According to a belief in the Christian world; As Jesus goes to the crucifixion, all the flowers on his path bend with respect and sorrow, but Kaiser’s Crown stands tall. But this flower, deeply touched by Jesus' gaze at him and then crucified, bends his neck from sorrow and shame and begins to cry. Because of this story, this flower is considered sacred in the Christian world.

2) Assyrians living in the Hakkâri region in the past, names this flower “Weeping tulip” because it emits water from its belly every morning. “Ters Lale”, roughly translated as “upside down tulip” is still very valuable and under protection today.

Lale

In Persian folklore, the first Tulip is said to have bloomed from the blood of star crossed lovers, Farhad and Shirin, in a tale reminiscent of the infamous Romeo and Juliet.

A lowly stone cutter, Farhad, loved the Princess Shirin, and wanted to win her heart. One day Princess Shirin was led into the mountain’s forest by her courtesan and when she saw Farhad and heard his music, she fell in love.

When her father, the Shah heard that his only daughter had fallen for someone beneath her he was not happy. He decreed that Farhad, being a commoner, must complete a task: to dig a canal through the bedrock of the hills. Farhad didn’t blink; he loaded up his spade and headed for the hills. He labored tirelessly for years and he was making real progress. Word reached the Shah that Farhad had almost completed his task. He sent one of the princess’ courtiers to tell Farhad that Shirin was dead. Then, overcome by grief, Farhad used his spade to take his life, and his blood flowed into the canal. When news reached Princess Shirin she ran to the mountains. Upon seeing him, she then took her own life. Where they lay together, their scarlet blood pooled, and each drop formed a tulip. Ensuring their love will live forever.

Tulip is a flower that originated from Anatolia and has been the main crown of the gardens for centuries. A period of the Ottoman Empire was named after him, but it was forgotten in Anatolia with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and after a while it became important again in the Netherlands. It was the first gift from the Ottoman Empire to the Netherlands in ancient times.

Kardelen - Hercai

Once upon a time, two wild flowers fell in love with each other. One said to the other: “Let’s bloom in the winter so all the nature will belong to us and you will belong only to me” for it loved the other dearly and didn’t want to share her beauty with the other flowers. So instead of spring, he bloomed in the dead cold of winter, piercing through the blanket of snow, hoping to see his lover. He looked around to see the beautiful colors of his lover but she was nowhere to be seen. Deeply saddened, the flower bent his head and waited for the end of his time. Since then, the flower who kept its lover’s promise by blooming in winter is called “snowdrop”. The other flower that disappointed its lover by blooming in the summer is called “Pansy Flower”.
